My background combines a long-standing interest in art & design with science. In previous roles, I’ve used this blend to collaborate on projects that communicate scientific ideas though engaging design and animations.
I’ve enjoyed working on projects to connect the public with current research. As an example, I collaborated with the authors of ‘A planetary collision afterglow and transit of the resultant debris cloud’ Nature paper, to create a simple and concise animation for a press release. This particular animation was about a planetary collision and was selected for use on the BBC’s The Sky at Night programme.
Particularly, I’m also proud of the work I have done to inspire young audiences to get involved in science, removing stereotypes around who can contribute, and reducing the stigma of it being ‘too hard’. In my work, I like to create learning environments that are accessible and appealing. A key example was ‘Serol’s Cosmic Explorers’, where I designed the website, produced graphics, animated videos, 3D printed models, and various other print activities.
Aside from my interests in design and science, I love to figure skate, after many years in childhood competing both nationally and internationally, representing GB. I’m also continuing to develop my Japanese language skills at a conversational level, as it connects to my culture and family history. In my free time, I like long walks, gardening, and catching up with friends over board games!
